Hanif said that this mechanism will provide incentives for people who have made efforts to sort waste and will not be subjected to retribution fee.

"We're supporting Jakarta Provincial Government's plan to run it on January 1, 2025," Hanif said, Tuesday (11/19).

He said that Jakarta could be an inspiring example of waste management for other regions.

Jakarta Environmental Agency Head, Asep Kuswanto, said waste management system in Jakarta is based on upstream to downstream management. Various steps have been taken so far to maximize upstream-based waste management.

"We have implemented RW-based waste management program, supported a circular economy through waste banks and built the Jakarta Recycle Center recycling center in Pesanggrahan," he said.

According to him, with waste sorting means more than half of the waste does not need to be sent to the landfill. Therefore, with the policy of the Cleaning Service Retribution starting January 1, 2025, residents are required to sort waste if they do not want to be subjected with retribution fee.

"We also support the waste reduction revolution through the Cleaning Service Retribution. Households that sort waste and become active customers of waste banks will be exempted from cleaning service retribution," he added.

As for information, Jakarta has been a pioneer in waste management through various regulations such as Governor Regulation No 142/2019 about the use of environmentally friendly shopping bags, and up to Jakarta Governor Regulation No 77/2020 about waste management at RW level.
